Works Black downs Devils in tie-breaker
Works Black moved through to the grand final in A grade interclub snooker, beating the Devils in a very close semi-final.
The teams were tied after the first round, with wins to Black from Rodney Martin (50) 2-0 over Andrew Rainbow (26) and Peter Wallace (40) 2-1 over Heath Rainbow (32).
For the Devils, Shane Franklin (46) won 2-1 over David Bates (-20) and Josh Rainbow (40) 2-0 against Bruce Lockley (18).
In the tie-breaker, Lockley turned the tables on Josh Rainbow only to see Peter Wallace go in off the black against Heath Rainbow and again tie the scores at one-all. Rodney Martin and Andrew Rainbow were closely matched in the decider until the unpredictable Martin played two brilliant shots, on the blue and then the pink, to win the match for Black.
Works Blue ended the run of first-year team Raiders, winning its semi-final, which also required extra frames after a tie in the first round.
For Blue, Rolf Stevenson (30) defeated Phil Rowbottom (50) 2-0, and John Stevenson (36) defeated Alan Armitage (44) 2-1. For the Raiders, Keith Coomber (28) won over Peter Donati (0) 2-1 and Lionel Young (36) 2-1 against Michael Leslie (44).
In the tie-breaker, Blue's Rolf Stevenson again beat Phil Rowbottom while Devils' Alan Armitage turned the tables on John Stevenson. Blues captain Peter Donati, playing from scratch, got up in his frame against Keith Coomber, and the Raiders, who were on top of the ladder for most of the season, were eliminated from the finals.
The preliminary final tomorrow night will see the Devils against the Blue team, with the winner going on to play Black for the 2011 crown.
•IN A RESERVE, the competition's new boys, the Green Horns, went straight through to the grand final with a 7-4 win against Works Green in their semi-final. The Brown brothers, Ethan and Zane, won 2-0 for the Green Horns, with Andrew Thomas winning for Works Green.
The other semi-final was a one- sided affair, Works Navy winning 7-1 to eliminate last year's premier, Works Amber.
Navy players Ben Conrads, John Fordham and Warren Hayes each won 2-0, with Brian O'Byrne winning his second frame against Peter Grimes to seal the win. The final two matches were not required.
Green will play Navy in the preliminary final tonight, with the winner to be matched against the Green Horns for the premiership.
