Gourlay Shield honours are on the line
TASMANIA'S premier intrastate event, the Gourlay Shield, will be contested at the Launceston Workers Club at the weekend.
Six snooker and two billiards players from the three regions will play four matches, each starting on Saturday at 10am and finishing Sunday about 3.30pm.
THE NORTHERN TEAM IS: Snooker: Graeme Pickett, Roydyn Bishop, Gary Bjarnoe Elliott, Robin McEnnulty, Ben Swain and John Fraser. Billiards: David Bates and Peter Donati.
THE SOUTHERN TEAM IS: Snooker: Anthony Adams, Luke Webb, Jerremy Cowie, Steve Cowie, Tony Adams, Rob Higgins. Billiards: Wayne Stokes and John Matthewson.
THE NORTH-WEST TEAM IS: Snooker: Callam Bissett, Peter Spencer, Bob Boucher, Cale Barrett, Gerrad Wicks, Michael Kelly. Billiards: Geoff Lehman and Joe Bonnici.
Interclub snooker
IN the A-grade competition this week, Works Black whitewashed Works Blue to set up a semi-final against Devils, while Raiders held on to win 3 to 1 and eliminate Works Gold.
For Black, Peter Wallace (2-1), Rodney Martin (2-0), Bruce Lockley (2-0) and David Bates (2-0) were all winners.
For Raiders, Keith Coomber (2-0), Alan Armitage (2-0) and Lionel Young (2-1) won their matches, John Fraser (2-1) was Gold's only winner.
In A reserve, Works Amber, winner of the reserve premiership during the past three years, was dead and buried in its elimination match against Exeter until Adam Gurr took on the role of Lazarus. He came back from 33 down on the colours. With his team reeling at 3 to 6, Gurr managed to draw his second frame with Exeter captain Derek Peart, then watched as Peart went in off the respotted black. With the score now 4 to 6, Damien Bushby won both frames against Chris Reid and the elimination final was level at 6-all. The alleys were drawn, Gurr and Bushby again won their frames and Amber progressed to next week's semi- final against Works.
Greg Reid and Lloyd Rogers won both matches for Exeter.
Works Green won 7 to 5 against Works Navy and will play the Green Horns in the second semi.
Navy will take on Amber in the cutthroat first semi-final.
Green player David Thomas was the only one to win both frames in a tight final.
