Bates on song with Northern team in shield win
THE Northern team won the Doug Salter Shield, 50-up billiards, at the Penguin Club.
The team of David Bates, Peter Donati, Roydyn Bishop, Adrian White,  Terry Adams and Gary Bjarnoe- Elliott won 18 matches, holding out  North-West (15) and Southern (three).
Bates continued his strong  billiards season by being named the player of the tournament and scoring  the highest break of 54, just five short of the maximum break in a  50-up billiard match.
Bates, Adams and Bjarnoe-Elliott won  all four matches played, Joe Bonnici was the standout North-West  player, winning four, and South's Steve Cowie won two.
The next state event is the Tasmanian billiards championship on June 4-5 at the Claremont RSL Club.
• INTERCLUB Snooker newcomers Works Green Horns, featuring four  first-year snooker players, recorded its second match win, defeating  Exeter RSL 7-5 in the Wednesday night competition. The Green Horns, set  up by prominent A grade player Peter Donati to accommodate up-and-  coming eightball players, now sits in the top four. Works Red defeated  Works Green 8-4, while works teams Amber and Navy had a 6-6 draw.
All A grade matches ended in draws with no affect on the ladder positions.
This week's matches: today: A Reserve Amber v RSL White, Red v Green  Horns, at Works Club, Exeter RSL v Navy at Exeter RSL. Works Green has  the bye.
 Tomorrow: A Grade Flaming Devils v RSL Grey at Launceston RSL , Black v Exeter RSL, Raiders v Blue, at the Works Club.
