Seeds to be hard to beat

THE Northern Tasmanian billiards championship will provide some interesting matches, with defending champion and top seed Graeme Pickett and in-form third seed David Bates likely to meet in the February 26 final.
Bates will need to get past the number two seed and last year's runner-up, Peter Donati, and Pickett is drawn to meet Gary Bjarnoe Elliott or Adrian White in the other semi-final.
The A-reserve championship sees Barry Glover seeded number one with Andrew Saltmarsh number two, while Dean Wilson is seeded one for the B-grade billiards championship.
Black holds lead
IN the billiards roster, Works Black holds a seven-point break with just four weeks remaining.
Works Red was the big winner this week, scoring 4-0, with the aid of two forfeits, against Works Blue. Longford RSL, Works Green and the Flaming Devils also moved up the standings, with 3-1 wins over Works Navy, Works Gold and Exeter RSL respectively.
David Bates still leads the player rankings, having won eight of nine matches, followed by Bruce Lockley (eight from 10), Glen Johansen, and Steve Leary.
RESULTS: Works Red d Works Blue 4-0, Alan Armitage (215) beat Hans Georgieff (285), Peter Seaman (305) beat Michael Leslie (225). Longford RSL d Works Navy 3-1, Wayne Purdon (250), Graeme Purdon (305) and Greg Williams (265) won for Longford. Philip Page (270) for Navy. Works Green d Works Gold, 3-1, George Zammit (290), Lee Morcom (245), Glen Johansen (255) and Rolf Stevenson (250) won. Devils d Exeter RSL 3-1, Andrew Rainbow (285) Heath Rainbow (275) Roydyn Bishop (on forfeit) and Derek Peart (290) won.
LADDER AFTER ROUND 12: Black 44, Gold 37, Longford 34, Exeter RSL 32, Flaming Devils 33, Green 31, Red 28, Navy 27, Blue 21.
Juniors excel
THE Australian junior eightball championships concluded on Saturday in Darwin with the Tasmanian team competing in the under- 12, under-15 and under-18 sections bringing home some good results.
Tasmania won the teams event, defeating Queensland in the final, with some great performances including Penguin's Cale Barrett going through the under-15 round- robin tournament undefeated. Barrett lost his second semi- final match before bouncing back in the preliminary final and losing the final against Queensland's Vijay Randall 6-5.
In the under-12 final it was a similar story, with Hobart's Brodie Stubbs not dropping a match in the round robin but losing the grand final 6-2 to Hayden Goode, of Queensland.
This was one of the most successful efforts by a Tasmanian team at the junior championships.
