Scorpions sting Riverside
THE Launceston eightball summer roster grand finals were played at the Launceston Workers Club on Saturday with an even representation of hotels and clubs.
The division 1 grand final saw the LWC Scorpions taking on the Riverside Hotel with the Riverside team taking an early lead of 3-2 after the first set of five frames.
Scorpions won the next four frames to take a 6-4 lead and quickly wrapped the match up 8-4.
Division 2 saw LWC Black play the Duke of Wellington, who got away to a great 4-1 start in the first set winning the match in the third 8-5.
In division 3 the TRC took on the Legana Tavern team and this proved the closest match of the night with the TRC winning 8-6.
Purdon a winner
LONGFORD'S Wayne Purdon won the Northern A reserve billiards championship defeating Barry Glover 284-191 at the Workers Club.
Dean Wilson retained his B grade championship, defeating John Saggers 251-228 in a close match.
Blue into finals
WORKS Blue whitewashed the ladder leader Works Black scoring maximum points to grab the last finals' spot at the expense of Works Red who travelled to Longford needing just a draw but lost 3-1 and missed the cut.
Works Green was impressive, winning 3-1 over Exeter RSL, although the match between Wilson and Derek Peart went to the wire with Wilson winning by a point.
Flaming Devils 3-1 win over Works Gold secured their finals' future.
David Bates, although losing his last two matches, held onto the consistency trophy with 11 wins from 15 matches.
Bates reduced his handicap from minus 60 to minus 95 over the season.
Wilson was runner-up, winning 10 from 14 and the competition's youngest player, 16-year-old Josh Rainbow, was equal third with Hans Georgieff.
The first week of the finals' series sees The Flaming Devils (4) play Exeter RSL (5) in the first elimination final tonight, Works Gold (3) versus Works Blue (6) in the second elimination tomorrow when Works Black (1) plays Works Green (2) in a qualifying final. All matches are at the Workers Club.
