Focus moves to snooker season
WITH the billiards final won by Works Blue, all attention is on the upcoming Northern snooker season.
Teams have been nominated from the Working Men's Club, Launceston RSL, Exeter RSL and also a Longford team, which will possibly play out of one of the Launceston clubs.
The competition is played from handicap with teams of six on Wednesday nights, and four players on Thursday nights. Players range from a 14-year-old through to an 82-two-year-old.
Last year's rosters had closely matched teams, and this season is shaping up as another great competition.
Defending A-grade (Thursday night) snooker champion Exeter RSL has nominated the same team that won the premiership in September last year and will again play from the Exeter club.
The A-reserve (Wednesday night) premier Works Amber, will again be the team to beat in that grade
Any player, male or female, wanting to join a snooker team on either Wednesday or Thursday nights is asked to contact their local club, or call 0408 132 699.
The Australian masters championship will be held at the Miandra Club, Queensland, starting this weekend.
Three Launceston players, Northern billiards champion David Bates, along with Peter Donati and Gary Bjarnoe-Elliott, are competing in the event with all three having a strong chance of bringing home titles.
The Doug Salter Shield, 50-up billiards, will be held on the North-West Coast on May 15-16, where the Northern team of David Bates, Graeme Pickett, Peter Donati, Roydyn Bishop, Adrian White, Terry Adams, Gary Bjarnoe-Elliott and Keith Coomber will start favourite.
State 8Ball
Congratulations to David Lee on defending the State Calcutta that he won last year by winning this years State Calcutta. This year was a family affair with David defeating his brother Ricky Lee in the final 5 - 4.
Special mention must go to Ricky who beat the current World 8 Ball Champion Michael Hill from the UK, who is currently touring the State with some exhibition shows, Ricky defeated Mick twice in the double elimination format, a great effort by Ricky.
In all 27 people played in the event which was our highest number of entries in recent years and those present were treated to some high quality games, not only by Mick Hill but also the Lee boys (Some video footage will be uploaded to the Eightball Tasmania Facebook page).

Eightball champ to demonstrate skills in North
WORLD eightball champion Mick Hill will give a demonstration of his skills at two exhibition evenings this week.
He will appear at the Launceston Workers Club tomorrow night and then at the Country Club Hotel at Longford on Friday.
The Englishman first won the world eightball title in 2004 and in July last year beat reigning world number one Gareth Potts 11-8 for the title.
The game was considered one of the best seen at the world titles due to the quality of play shown by both men.
Hill, 30, has been touring some of Australia's mainland states and agreed to come to Tasmania when approached by Northern eightball officials.
Country Club Hotel licensee Matthew Stringer was one of those responsible for organising his visit.
"His shows each night will go for a couple of hours and will give people a chance to hear how he reached the top as well as see a demonstration of his ability," Stringer said.
"He's won 41 major titles and is considered the most successful rules player in the world."
An eightball cue autographed by Hill will be raffled on each night of the show.
Hill will complete his visit to Tasmania when he takes part in a statewide calcutta at the Launceston Workers Club on Saturday night.
