Interclub Billiards

Works Gold, have won the 2012 Northern Billiards Final to complete a fairytale run from 6th. Spot on the billiards ladder, needing to win every match over the past five weeks to eventually progress to and win the Grand final against last years champions Works Blue.

Gold’s players, John Fraser, Gary Bjarnoe-Elliott, Rolf and John Stevenson, as well as Steve Leary and John Saggers, were not considered a major threat in the finals. The Blue team featuring Graeme Pickett and Peter Donati as well as Micheal Leslie and Hans Georgieff, and the Brown brothers Zane and Ethan have dominated both billiards and snooker finals in the past two seasons and were odds on to continue their winning streak.

But that was not to be, Bjarnoe-Elliott, known better as a snooker player, started the night with a comfortable win over Goergieff, and John Stevenson receiving 170 start from  Donati, didn’t let his more accomplished opponent get into the game, winning by 88 points. At 2 nil down the Blue team were left to rely on their champions, Graeme Pickett, who would give 370 start to Rolf Stevenson, and Micheal Leslie, known to many as their bogey man, to produce some magic.

Again it was not to be, Gold’s John Fraser who has enjoyed a stellar season, came from 50 behind to catch and pass the dangerous Leslie, eventually winning by 14 points to secure the final for his Gold team. Meanwhile Rolf Stevenson had Pickett covered, Pickett’s best break on the night of 50 was never going to be enough to make up the difference, the match was called off with Rolf needing just 11 points to get out.

Gold’ player of the finals was defiantly John Stevenson, who won all five finals matches he played, that together with a season where, although he was used sparingly, won five of eight matches played. John Fraser wasn’t very far behind, winning four of the five finals matches he played, and a season score of ten from 16 played. Gold’s fill-in John Saggers won all four matches he player during the roster season.

Grand Final Results:

Works Gold 3 defeated Works Blue 0, Gary Bjarnoe-Elliott (180) defeated Hans Georgieff (260) 400-352, John Stevenson (260) defeated Peter Donati (90) 400-312, John Fraser (185) defeated Micheal Leslie (235) 400-386, Rolf Stevenson (270) and Graeme Pickett (-100) 389-259.
