Tasmania proved too strong for the Victorian Snooker and Billiards team, winning the 40th. Anniversary Andrews/Atkins Shield in Burnie over the weekend. Tasmania won 7-4 to claim the Shield for the sixth time in the events 40 year history.

 

Tasmania led 2-1, after the first session, on Friday night, with Hobart’s Steve Carroll (Tas. No. 4 snooker) beating Brendan Taylor and Luke Webb also from Hobart beat John McKay at number 2 billiards. Brian Cole, (NW) lost number 3 snooker to Victoria’s Charlie Chafe.

Saturday’s morning session saw Tasmania extend its lead to 5-3, with wins to Launceston’s Graeme Pickett (No 3 billiards), over Ian Dale, and Hobart’s Anthony Adams, (no 5 snooker) over Dale MacKay 4-2, followed by North West’s Callan Bissett (No. 6 snooker), beating veteran Victorian player Harry Andrews 4-0.

Victoria won the Women’s snooker match, Anna Lynch beating South’s Tracey Baylis, 4-3 in a match that could have gone either way. Victoria also won the junior snooker match with 17 year old Ryan Thomerson scoring a tight 4-2 win over 15 year old Cale Barrett from Penguin.

The final session on Saturday night saw Victoria fight back to 4-5 with number 2 snooker player David Cosgriff winning 4-0 against Launceston’s Peter Donati, however Northern Billiard Champion David Bates turned on his class to make a 179 break, the highest billiard break in the history of the tournament, accounting for Victorian captain Ron Cole, to clinch Tasmania’s victory.

Tasmanian Billiards, and Snooker, Champion, South’s Les Higgins, (No. 1 snooker), and State captain made it 7-4, winning a tight match, 4-2, against Daryl Tippett.

David Bates won the John McKay medal for best player over the weekend.

The highest snooker break was a 63 break to Victorian David Cosgriff.

The Final Five, went down to the last frame between Works teams, Blue and Black, the Black team held on for a 2-2 draw, gaining 3 points and held fourth spot over Gold, 56 and The Flaming Devils 55. Terry Adams overcame Ethan Brown by 6 points and Bruce Lockley won for Black. Hans Georgieff winning by just 3 points, and Michael Leslie were Blue’s winners. Had Black of lost 1-3 they would have finished on 55 and out of the five.

The Devils went into their match in fourth place, however a 1-3 loss to Works Navy ended their season. Alan Legg, Phil Page and Ben Conrades won for Navy, Josh Rainbow was the Devils only winner.

Works Green were the big improvers, beating second placed Raiders 3-1, however other results didn’t go their way and they finished 7th  on 53 points. For Green, Glen Johansen, Dean Wilson and George Zammit were winners, Alan Armitage won for the Raiders.

Works Gold, who won last week against the Minor premiers RSL White, just missed out on another win when Red’s Phil Rowbottom held on to win his match against Gold’s Rolf Stevenson, by just two points. The 2-2 draw left Gold in fifth spot, 1 point clear of The Flaming Devils. Gary Bjarnoe-Elliott and John Stevenson scored for Gold, Rowbottom and Steve Andjelkovic won for Red.

Exeter Social Club, finished their season off with a 3-1 win over minor Premiers RSL White, however it couldent prevent them collecting the wooden spoon. Derek Peart, Rex Swain and Chris Reid, score for Exeter, Adrian White was RSL’s only winner.

Leading Players:  RSL White’s  Dennis Collins has won the most consistent player award, winning 11 frames from 16 played, (68.75%) from Raiders Keith Coomber, 9 from 14 (64.28%) followed by John Fraser and Bruce Lockley10 from 16, Ben Conrades 8 from 13, Heath Rainbow 11 from 18, Lionel Young  7 from 12, Dean Wilson and David Bates  10 from 17, Harley Stebbings 8 from 14.
