IT is with sadness that the Tasmanian snooker community marks the passing of a stalwart of the game after Hobart's Clem Hoggett succumbed to a long illness at his Berridale home on Saturday.

Hoggett, who had his 70th birthday last year, was well known for his attacking style of play.

He was runner-up to James Giannaros in the 1981 Southern Tasmanian snooker championship.

The left-hander was also a member of the 1982 Tasmanian team that scored the state's very first win against Victoria, at the Ulverstone RSL Club.

Hoggett, playing last, with the scores at four-all, played a brilliant pink to set up his black ball win against former Victorian champion Harry Andrews.

Hoggett was a former president and life member of Southern Tasmanian Billiards and Snooker Association and a board member of the Tasmanian association.

He was very accomplished referee and officiated at the 1980 IBSF world snooker championship in Launceston, as well as many other state and national championships.

Hoggett was also a former chairman of the Hobart Greyhound Racing Club and a former president and life member of the Claremont Bowls Club.

Northern roster action

THE Northern billiards roster was back in action on Wednesday night with Exeter RSL and Works Black playing a catch-up game at Exeter RSL followed by their round 11 match at the Workers Club on Thursday night.

With the home table advantage, Exeter held Black to a 2-2 draw in the first match. However, it was no match for the ladder- leader, going down four straight on Thursday night.

David Bates lost his first billiard match this season on Exeter's slick tables but he returned to his best on Thursday night, easily accounting for Rex Swain, his nemesis of Wednesday night.

Bruce Lockley, Blacks' other in-form player, won both his matches, accounting for Adam Bindoff and Derek Peart.

Exeter's Derek Peart narrowly beat Terry Adams in the Wednesday night match.

Works Green drew 2-2 with Works Red, George Zammit (285) lost to Barry Glover (250), Cor Zoon (300) beat Phil Rowbottom (290), Dean Wilson (265) lost to Keith Coomber (175) and Glen Johansen (260) defeated Alan Armitage (230).
