Snooker 2012 underway

Works Raiders made a statement as the 2012 Winter “A Grade” Snooker Rosters got underway last week. The Raiders, who finished well up the ladder in the last two rosters, both snooker and billiards, only to fade away during the finals, crushed the Flaming Devils 4-0, dropping only one frame. The leagues oldest player, Harley Stebbings, who has transferred over from Launceston RSL, won 2-0 against Heath Rainbow, Alan Armitage and Lionel Young also won 2-0 against Scott Kopriva and Andrew Rainbow respectively, Barry Glover beat Josh Rainbow 2-1.

Works Blue, last year’s premiers, got their title defence off to a good start, beating Works Black 3-1. In the battle of the back markers, Blue’s Graeme Pickett of -18, beat David Bates of -20, two straight, Hans Georgieff beat Rodney Martin 2-1, Rolf Stevenson too strong for Andrew Saltmarsh winning 2-0. Captain Bruce Lockley was Black’s only winner, scoring a 2-1 win over Peter Donati to avoid a whitewash.

At the Exeter Club

 the home side led early but had to settle for a draw against Launceston RSL Grey. Exeter’s recruit, Dean Wilson found the going tough against David Sheppard, losing 2-0, Rex Swain got Exeter back level, wining a tight match against Robin McEnnulty. Adam Bindoff took full advantage of a 52 point start against Roydyn Bishop winning 2-0. Launceston RSL’s Terry Adams playing Gary Bakker, fluked the black to win the first frame, then won the second, on the pink, to secure a draw on the night.

A Grade Ladder after round 1, Works Raiders 4, Works Blue 4, Launceston RSL 2, Exeter Social Club 2, Works Black 0, Flaming Devils 0, Works Gold had the bye.

Best breaks: Bruce Lockley 45, Peter Donati 43, Graeme Pickett 36, Rex Swain 27, David Shepphard 24, Adam Bindoff 23, Roydyn Bishop 22.

Leading Players, Lionel Young, Alan Armitage, Harley Stebbings, David Sheppard, Terry Adams, Rolf Stevenson and Graeme Pickett all won 2 frames to nil.

“A Reserve” gets underway this Wednesday night, with Works Amber playing Works Navy and Works Green versus Exeter Social Club Green, at the Works Club and Launceston RSL White meeting Works Red at the Launceston RSL on Thursday night..

This weeks “A Grade” matches, Exeter Social Club are at home to The Flaming Devils, Raiders v Blue and Gold v Launceston RSL at the Works club, Works Black have the bye

50 up Billiards, played at the Works Club over this weekend. The Northern team of David Bates, Graeme Pickett, Peter Donati, Roydyn Bishop, Keith Coomber and Rex Swain are favourites to retain the Salter Shield when they take on South and North West North hold the Shield, having scored 18 wins to North West 15 and South 3, at the Penguin Sports and Services Club last year.
