Tasmania’s best Snooker and Billiards players match their skills against Victoria at the Burnie Club this weekend. Les Higgins (snooker) and David Bates (billiards) head the state team which is a warm favourite to win the 40th. Anniversary event.

Victoria has dominated the Shield, with Tasmania winning only five ties, however this year Tasmania has its strongest team and are confident of reversing the 5-6 lost to Victoria in Melbourne last year

Northern “B” Grade Billiards championship

Devils player Josh Rainbow has won the 2012 Northern “B” Grade Billiards championship, defeating Ethan Brown 222-200, in the final played at Works last Saturday. Josh, who at fifteen is the youngest player in the Association, finished second to Ethan in the round robin, with three wins each, but turned the tables in the 90 minute final.

Five teams are still alive in the race to secure third to fifth place in the final five, with Works Blue currently third on 55 points and Works Green seventh on 52 points.

All eyes will be on the match between the Blue and Black teams, with the loser likely to miss the cut. Green will need to beat second placed Raiders to have any chance as Gold and Devils will start favourites against Red and Navy, respectively, who are both out of contention for the finals.

Last week Works Gold had a big win against the Minor premiers RSL White 3-1, John Fraser, Rolf and John Stevenson scored for Gold, Adrian White was RSL’s only winner.

Gold are now one point out of the five and play Red in the last round.

Works Green also had a 3-1 win against Exeter Social Club, relegating them to the wooden spoon, Glen Johansen, George Zammit and Lee Morcom were Green’s winners, Adam Bindoff the sole winner for Exeter.

Works Red won 3-1 against Works Navy, ending Navy’s chances of making the finals, and put Red four points clear of Exeter, who are at the bottom of the ladder. Phil Rowbottom, Peter Seaman and Steve Andjelkovic won for the Red team, Alan Legg was Navy’s only winner.

Works Blue drew 2-2 with The Flaming Devils, Micheal Leslie and Zane Brown won for Blue, Josh and Andrew Rainbow won for the Devils.

Works Black also drew 2-2 with Works Raiders, Terry Adams and Bruce Lockley scored for Black, Alan Armitage and Barry Glover were Raiders winners.

RSL  White’s Dennis Collins needs to win to wrap up the “Most consistent player” award, a draw to Collins and a win to Gold’s John Fraser will see the title shared.
