North fails to win statewide shield

Ted Pickett shieldTHE Northern team of David Bates, Peter Donati, Roydyn Bishop, Gary Bjarnoe Elliott, Rex Swain, Bruce Lockley, Gary Bakker and Keith Coomber failed in its bid to win the Ted Pickett Shield.
The tournament, played at the Claremont RSL Club, is a triangular competition between A grade players from the North, North-West and South, and is played over 48 matches.
It is in honour of the late Ted Pickett, a Northern Tasmanian sportsman who won the 1955 Australian Snooker Championship.
The Southern team easily retained the shield, winning 25 matches, with the North winning 13 matches and North-West 10.
For the North, Works Black players David Bates won three matches, and Roydyn Bishop, Gary Bjarnoe Elliott, Bruce Lockley and Keith Coomber won two matches.
South's Les Higgins and Anthony Adams were the only players to win all four matches played. The highest break went to Les Higgins with 63, Steve Carroll cues 3-4 with 50, Denny Mayne cues 6-7 with 43 and Keith Coomber for cues 7 and 8 with a 35 clearance.

Northern eightball
IN Northern eightball, Troy Rudling from Perth Black again proved he is the player to beat for the NTEBA singles title, easy accounting for former state player Kris Cherry in the final 3-0 and taking out his third successive singles title.
In the division 1 final, Shane Franklin defeated the captain of the LWC Black team Alex Brooks.

Interclub snooker
THE Raiders went back to the top of the A grade ladder with a whitewash, 4-0 over Works Gold.
Alan Armitage won 2-0, Lionel Young, Kieth Coomber and Barry Glover all won 2-1.
The Devils drew 2-2 with Works Black to hold second spot, Andrew and Heath Rainbow won for the Devils, Bruce Lockley and Rodney Martin won for Black.
Works Blue beat Launceston RSL Grey 3-1. John Stevenson, Micheal Leslie and Graeme Pickett all won 2-0, and Harley Stebbings won 2-0 for the Launceston RSL team.
In A reserve, bottom team Works Navy was the big winner, accounting for Amber 9-3. Brian O'Byrne, Ray Skinner, Craig Jory, and Ben Conrads were Navy's winners, Peter Grimes won 2-0 for Amber.
Works Green held top spot on the ladder, winning 7-5 against Works Red. Rowan Phelps and Dean Wilson won for Green, Peter Seaman won his two matches for Navy.
Works Green Horns also won 7-5 against Exeter RSL Green. Brothers Zane and Ethan Brown won 2-0 for the Green Horns, John Waters with 64 start, held out Peter Donati to win 2-0 for Exeter.
